Cotinine Test with Urine

Cotinine is a substance found in tobacco and is a main metabolite of nicotine. This means that nicotine is converted to cotinine while it is metabolized in the body. A cotinine test with urine is designed to track the amount of cotinine in your system and check if the levels are too high.

Currently, cotinine is being researched as a possible treatment for depression, PTSD, schizophrenia and other difficult diseases. A cotinine urine test can help you and doctors determine if the substance is affecting your daily activities. At a certain point, the medication was even developed, but it was never released to the market.

Nicotine and Cotinine Test

As with most drugs and substances, cotinine is stored in the urine for several days after the effects of the medication have worn off. The urine-based nicotine test is based on this method, using urine to determine if traces of the substance are present in your system. A nicotine test works similarly to this test.

Urine-based test strips are often used for drug screening and are even integrated into dip cards and test cups. Their accuracy rate of 99% makes these sensitive drug tests a constant part of drug screening experiences. Cotinine

In a 24 hour urine sample, approximately 5% of a nicotine dose is excreted unchanged as the drug, 10% as cotinine, and 35% as hydroxycotinine; the concentrations of other metabolites are likely to make up less than 5%.

While cotinine is considered an inactive metabolite, its elimination profile is more stable than that of nicotine, which is strongly dependent on urine pH. Therefore, cotinine is considered a good biological marker for determining nicotine consumption.

The half-life of nicotine in plasma is approximately 60 minutes after inhalation or parenteral administration.

Nicotine and cotinine are rapidly excreted via the kidneys; the detection window for cotinine in urine at a cutoff of 200 ng/mL is likely up to 2-3 days after nicotine consumption.

Instructions for Nicotine Test Strips

Bring the tests, samples, buffers and/or controls to room temperature (15–30 °C) before use, then follow these simple steps.

1. Open:
   Remove the COT drug test strip from the sealed packaging or take one strip from the can and use it as soon as possible. For the best result, the test should be performed within one hour.
2. Dip:
   Hold the strip at the end where the product name is printed. To avoid contamination, do not touch the strip membrane. Dip the test strip in the urine sample for at least 10–15 seconds. Do not dip past the maximum line (MAX) on the test strip.
3. Wait:
   After the test has finished, remove the strip from the sample and place it on a non-absorbent flat surface.
4. Read:
   Start the timer and wait for the colored bands to appear. The result should be read after 5 minutes. Do not interpret the result after 10 minutes.
